Where to Explore in Mystic, Connecticut

I recently went on a road trip with my family and spent a day in Mystic, Connecticut and Plymouth, Massachusetts. This had been my first time exploring Mystic and you can easily spend a day or two at this charming New England town. If you are looking for a fun weekend away in New England, I highly recommend taking the time to explore what Mystic, Connecticut has to offer with my list of suggestions below!

Visit the Belugas at the Mystic Aquarium

Juno, the male beluga at the aquarium

While I personally have mixed feelings about aquariums and zoos, if done ethically can be a great way to educate the public about animal conservation efforts. They can also be a great way to educate children and get them to care about animal welfare and the environment around them. The Mystic Aquarium is the only one in New England that has belugas and provides workshops on beluga whale research and conservation. We met Juno, the male beluga, who was absolutely adorable and loved to entertain all the visitors! My visit to the aquarium makes me want to change careers and become a marine conservationist!

Go Shopping in the Old Mistick Village

Alice in Wonderland cafe in the Village

The Old Mistick Village is this charming shopping center right next to the aquarium with a variety of unique shops to explore! From Alice in Wonderland’s cafĂ© and haunted bookshop to craft donuts, I highly recommend coming into the village hungry and ready to shop! The village is also family and pet friendly.

Wander the Mystic Seaport Museum

The Mystic Seaport Museum is the the largest maritime museum in the United States. It is notable for its collection of sailing ships and boats and for the re-creation of the crafts and fabric of an entire 19th-century seafaring village. It was even the recent location for the restoration project of the Mayflower II, a replica of the Mayflower ship. I personally enjoy educational museums and getting a glimpse of history.

Grab a bite at Mystic Pizza

I’ll be honest and confess that I’ve never seen the movie Mystic Pizza, but regardless, I wanted to check out this restaurant! I didn’t even get pizza but it was still fun to look around at the memorabilia and enjoy the vibe of the famous restaurant.

Needless to say, I fell in love with this charming New England town and would definitely spend another weekend away in this coastal village!
