Well it’s been a while since I’ve been on an overseas trip (14 months, but who’s counting?), but I’m happy to announce that I made my travel plans come true for this year and recently embarked on my road trip throughout the land of fire and ice! Iceland has definitely become a more popular travel destination in recent years and having driven throughout the country, I can most certainly see why! Everything from the diverse landscapes to the food and Nordic culture has had me already planning out my next trip over there! Here are some highlights in photos of our 8 day road trip along the ring road!
Day 1: Reykjavík to the Borgarfjörður Region
With nearly two-thirds of the population living throughout and outside of the capital, Reykjavík is a lovely little city worth spending the time to explore. We were able to see famous sites, such as the sun voyager and the Hallgrímskirkja Church within a close distance.

A different type of mountains than I’m use to
Our cabin in the middle of nowhere…cute and cozy!
Day 2: Borgarfjörður Region to Akureyri (the North Country)
Hraunfossar waterfall (aka “children’s waterfall”)
Sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the view!
Deildartungu-Hver, the largest geothermal spring in Europe
Not a bad view to have on our road trip!
Day 3: Akureyri to the North East
Midnight in Akureyri, it never gets completely dark out here in May!
Akureyri’s Botanical Gardens…the only plants in bloom so far!
The glorious Godafoss waterfall!
Asbyrgi Rock Formations
Day 4: The East Fjords
Hiking up the Hverfjall crater; the view was worth it!
Myvatn Nature Baths: a nice alternative to the Blue Lagoon
Dettifoss, still covered in ice and snow
Day 5: Along the East Coast
Crazy hike up to Hengifoss
Another hike conquered!
Nothing like seeing wild reindeer!
Day 6: The Southern Coast

Dverghamvar “column” rocks
Chillin’ at the black sands beach, expanded for miles!
Day 7: The Golden Circle back to Reykjavík
Seljalandsfoss, the only waterfall you can walk behind!
Gullfoss, the most popular waterfall in Iceland
Stokker the active geisure in the Golden Circle
Enjoying a Kaldi beer! A nice night out in Reykjavík!
Day 8: Reykjavík back to New England
From the Phallological Museum, offering the “Iceland experience”…
No trip to Iceland would be complete without a fish and chips meal!
